InDesign: Creating a Catalogue

Following on from our tutorial on InDesign the other day, today we had another tutorial on making a catalogue. Making catalogue is a useful skill[ to have as in the future I may be asked to create a catalogue or a brochure of my work so with these skills I will now know what to do. Another good reason why I need to know how to make a catalogue is because we are holding a print auction to help raise some money for our degree show next year which the design team is going to have to produce, so if I'm on the design team it will come in handy to help the team.

I wasn't sure what images to use as I din't really have a series of images that I really like but I decided to use the images that I took on holiday as a sort of holiday album. I didn't quite finish my catalogue in the time I had today as I didn't put prices on and print the catalogue but it's only because I ran out of time because I was struggling at the start with sizing my images so all of the images were the same size and because we were asked for a 12 page catalogue and I did 38 pages!

I had a lot of instructions to follow in order to print the catalogue which I unfortunately didn't get round to do but I have them for another time.

1. Open InDesign

2. Choose 'File new' -> Print -> and select A5

3. InDesign recognises front cover as page 1

4. Populate the pages with designs, images, prices and text

Print settings for InDesign:

1. Choose 'File -> Print Booklet

2. Click 'Print Settings' at the bottom of the screen. Change the printer to 'Xerox'

3. In the 'general' menu

4. Tick print blank pages

5. Now enter 'setup'

6. Choose: Paper size = A4, Orientation = Landscape, Width Height = 100%, Page position = centred

7. Click 'printer at bottom of screen

8. Click 'show details'

9. Click 'layout' then 'paperfeed'

10. Different paper is loaded into different trays. Tray 1 = A3 landscape, Tray 2 = A4 landscape, Tray 3 and 4 = normal trays and Tray 5 = bypass

11. Choose the tray that you need. In this case for an A5 booklet choose tray 2

12. Click the 'paperfeed' box again and change it to 'Xerox options'

13. Choose Paper -> Other type -> Plain paper

14. In the same menu click 'finishing' then booklet creation. Tick either 'booklet fold' and 'booklet fold and staple'

15. Also tick 'disable booklet layout'. Two must be ticked. Disable booklet layout and either booklet fold or booklet fold and staple

16. Change gutter to 0. Then click ok

17. Change the print quality to High Quality or High Resolution

18. Press print to send your booklet to Xerox printer.

Attached below is my catalogue. I had a lot of fun making it because it made me re live my holiday and made me really like the images that I had produced.
