Carri Angel is someone who came into my head to research after seeing Kirsty Mitchell's work. I first came across Carri Angel when I was at college, a couple of my friends went to sixth form with one of her daughters Poppy who does a lot of modelling for Carri and I looked into her work very briefly then but didn't look into it for research purposes.
She is the founder of alternative clothing label 'The Dark Angel Design Co' which specialises in a collection of fairytale clothing which are good for gothic, medieval and pagan wedding, prom dresses or costume and masked balls. I personally wouldn't say their good for proms or balls but they are definitely good for fairytales. As well as Carri designing and producing all the clothing for the company she also does all the photography for the promotion side of the business as well.
In 2004 Angel left the UK to promote her work around the world, since then she now has offices in Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand and California. I always thought that Carri was American because I got told that her daughter Poppy had moved over from America but when I heard her speak I couldn't hear an American accent so now knowing that they lived there for a while makes more sense, they returned to the UK in 2013 and settled in Devon because of the landscapes in Devon.
For the last 18 years photography has been the main focus of Carri's practice, her fantasy images are regularly featured in publications worldwide. I always see who I always thought was Carri around college and now I know why...'In 2017 she completed an MA in photography at Plymouth College of Art'... 'She is currently working full time at Plymouth College of Art as a lecturer on the BA (Hons) Degree in Commercial Photography for Fashion, Advertising & Editorial'.
'Her research work explores the detrimental effects of disposable fashion on society and the environment. She is a longstanding advocate of ethical fashion and is committed to promoting sustainability and diversity in the industry'.
I really struggled to find certain projects of hers that I felt inspired by because they all have aspects of the fantasy element that I am aiming for in my imagery. Her projects that I finally decided linked to most of my work were 'Fantasy Fashion', 'Tales of the Riverbank' and 'Faeries and Folklore'.
Tales of the Riverbank is water based which isn't what my project is based on but the editing behind the images. For my images I would like them to bright and colourful in the foreground where the subject of the image is and where I want the main focus to be and then the background to be darker to show a more sinister effect even though there's nothing sinister happening but it will show more fantasy.
Faeries and Folklore is a little bit more staged and eccentric to what I want to produce but it is getting closer to the style that I have in my head. The only things that I think my images and these images will have in common are the woodland as the background and the greenery in the images nothing us but the images are flawless if I can execute my images this well I will be happy.
Fantasy Fashion is probably the closet to the type of images I want to produce compared to Carri's. They're not exactly the images that relate to the story behind my images but they are shot in locations that I'm looking to shoot at. One thing that these images have that I wanted to try but now think the weather is too risky is that these are all shot on location by the looks of it.
I tried to find things that I didn't like about Carri's images but I couldn't the only thing were that not all the images relate to what I want to focus my work on but that's a good thing because she varies her work behind the same sort of theme which is clever.
