Gregory Crewdson - Research

I wanted to look at Gregory Crewdson's work and research into him a bit more because he makes sets and this is similar to what I am trying to attempt to do in my project. First I needed to find out a little bit about him.

He is an American artist, best known for his surreal photos that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality but is known as an artist in my opinion as well because he is a set designer as well. His sets are very complex but very successful, surreal representation of rural life. In his younger years he played in a punk rock band before attending the State University of New York at Purchase, where he earned his BFA. After completing his MFA at Yale University he began working on his first of many long photographic projects. His first one was Natural Wonder which represented highly built scenes showing the bizarre narratives of paranoia, lust and fantasy that are played out in the country.

His next two projects Hover and Twilight show dramatic and strange situations within typical middle class neighbourhoods, creating odd and unsettling images within fairly ordinary settings. Since 1993 he has worked as a professor at Yale University where he still works now as a teacher.

“My pictures are about a search for a moment—a perfect moment,” - Gregory Crewdson

I am definately inspired by Crewdson's work because of how well he designs his sets and how successful and dramatic they are. I have a vision of how I want my final images to look, in my head they're going to look as dramatic as Crewdson's.
