My response to fat shaming (300 word task)

One story that has come into the news over the last day or two is a lady who was on a flight sat in the middle of two overweight people said she couldn’t move and couldn’t do anything because they were intruding into her space and seat. One of the ladies that she was offending recorded the lady kicking off and has posted it online. The woman that started the argument was actually kicked off the flight because of her attitude towards the innocent passengers.

The video starts with the woman on the phone laughing saying to the person she is talking to ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do this for the next four hours… at least they’ll keep me warm’ she said jokingly. The flight attendant then comes along and says ‘I’ll try and find you a window seat’ she replies with ‘yes get me out of here’. She then continues to say ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I can’t breath, I’m so squished’.

She then turns to the overweight man on her right and says ‘I eat salad okay?’

The lady on her left then said to an attendant ‘Excuse me, can you find her another seat because I won’t be verbally abused by anyone.’  The woman then said ‘Thank goodness because I eat salad’ she was then moved from her seat and walked back down the aisle where a man confronted her and said ‘You should be ashamed of yourself madam, what you’re doing is terrible.’ She then continues to walk down the aisle of the plane with more passengers shouting things at her and she finished with ‘Why don’t you sit between the two pigs.’

After watching the video it made me really angry because why on earth does a woman  have a right to shame people about their weight who she doesn’t even know. They probably know they’re overweight but they can’t just loose weight with a touch of a button. Getting personal with anyone is never right but shaming them in front of a plane full of people is mortifying. If that had been me I would want an apology from the lady at least. I just don’t see any need of being that rude to anyone when they were completely innocent. Personally, I think she’s just done it for a bit of attention.

This Morning was the show that reminded me of the news as they had two ladies arguing each side of the story agreeing that either the woman sat in between both overweight people was correct in what she said or that the overweight people were innocent and didn’t deserve what happened. One lady believes that every passenger should be weighed before being allowed to board a plane which I think is absolutely ridiculous. People can help themselves by not being overweight but they can’t do anything immediately when at an airport. I think it’s also extremely rude to ask to weigh somebody. The other lady believed it was nothing but fat shaming because you’re not allowed to buy two seats for one person. I agree with her people can think all they want but when it comes to saying it there really is no need for it.
