Dunkirk

Updated: Mar 11, 2019

For research towards both my manifesto and my contextual essay I have decided to take the film Dunkirk out of the library as it's a place that is remembered for one main reason. For my manifesto project I want to create a piece of work where certain places hold one particular memory to me. I didn't know what happened during Dunkirk and didn't really know much about it until I watched the film.

The synopsis on the back of the DVD case said "The story unfolds on land, sea and air, as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk with enemy troops closing in, RAF Spitfires engage the enemy in the skies above the Channel, trying to protect the defenceless men below. Meanwhile, hundreds of small boats manned by both military officers and civilians are mounting a desperate rescue effort, ricking their lives in a race against time to save even a fraction of their army."

Because I didn't know much about the fight that happened in Dunkirk I decided to make lots of notes during the film to make me understand a lot more about what happened.

Enemy drew the British and French armies to the sea.

Trapped at Dunkirk, they await their fate - one of the soldiers finding a garden hose to drink very little water out of

Hoping for deliverance

For a miracle

French troops fire at English killing all but one

Burying a body in the sand on the beach of Dunkirk

All thirsty - water

See’s possibly his troops bodies that died in front of him get carried across the beach

The Mole - 1 week

Shots fired from planes above - looks like most people survived

2. The Sea - 1 day

Civilians going to war - getting the rescue equipment and life jackets ready

3. The Air - 1 hour

French were trying to get on the English ships when they had their own ships

Shots being fired at the boat whilst trying to carry a body on board

The Army was slowly decreasing in men but between the French and British they were just about hanging on

‘We need our army back’

Churchill was prime minister

Didn’t have enough small boats to ferry the men

The two boys that helped carry the body onto the boat at the last minute (one being one of the main characters snuck down below the pier/walkway/docks and listened in to the sergeants conversations)

Soldier on wreckage saved by the small boat owned by civilians

Air started shooting down and targetting the British waiting to go on board and whilst on board the boat - a lot of people were killed - others jumped off the boat to save the boat from sinking - swam to where the two boys were hiding out

Officer watched the boat sink and al his troops disappear into the water or swim to safety

Find another ship for the troops to board

All desperate to get on

Once on the boat they get fed and watered

The other boy that was with the main character burying the body on the beach seems to be struggling watching the aftermath of the war from the new ship - looking for a quick way out apparently

Soldier rescued by the civilians doesn’t want to go back to Dunkirk - really struggling - if he goes back they will all die (shellshocked)

British RAF troops trying to shoot the enemies

One of the British planes gets shot - pilot decides to go down - then doesn’t

Boat gets shot at and all the soldiers inside are all of a sudden underwater

Cannon is fired

The soldiers that was struggling on the outside of the boat opens the door and lets the soldiers free - they’re in the sea again

Think a British plane went down?

Someone in charge of the small boats coming to the troops in the water looks like the man that the civilians rescued? - is it in the past living through the guys past - the guy that has been rescued is in the daytime - the soldiers in the water are at night

George one of the civilians gets caught up in a fight from the rescued soldier and ends up getting hurt

Soldiers end up bacon the beach

Lying alive on the beach due to exhaustion

Tides turning because the bodies were coming back into land - being washed up

George can’t see

No destroyers - 1 on its way - officer is angry because their isn’t enough ships - the colonel is saying their saving the ships for the next battle in Britain

Only one ship allowed onto the beach at a time after the day before

RAF pilot down trying to get out

Boat soldiers are in for safety and protection keeps getting shot - they think it’s for target practice and then water starts coming in so they think their in the water but someone gets shot

Thanks the quiet solider is a spy - French instead - stolen a British dog tag- the man he buried on the beach

Boat gets targeted

All civilians and military come to the Dunkirk coast and everyone is very positive - they can see home

The civilian boat gets into oil - soldiers they’re saving are covered in oil

Targeted boat with Harry Styles in is still being filed with water

George passes away

Plane crashes into the sea and sets the oil alight with lots of soldiers in the sea - all on fire

A fighter plane - RAF gets it

Back in England - Harry Styles says ‘all we did was survive’

The man back in England said ‘that’s enough’
