Set designing

Today as a class we got set a task of designing a set and photographing it. This is something that I enjoyed doing because it could come in useful if I decide to set design for my project. We had three hours to come up with a narrative for the set, we had to work with the third years as well to get us getting to know them more. It was really fun but also very challenging because of the short amount of time and some people not necessarily working as well as they could have done.

We had resources to make our own set or we had a few sets that we had borrowed from illustration. We decided to borrow one of the sets from illustration because we didn't have a lot of time. Having the ready made set made it easier for us to come up with a narrative. Our narrative was to create 'A day in the life of a homeless person'. My idea behind this was to show how many times a day homeless people get walked passed and ignored. Even though we had the set we didn't have any characters to put on the set so we had to create them. We made our main character the homeless man and then we made some human silhouettes along with a little sausage dog. We made silhouettes as the characters were going to be ignoring the homeless man and didn't want to be noticed by the homeless man.

We wanted to show the different times of the day by using the lights and different props. We used two small lights that we were able to adjust the brightness on to light the set how we wanted to show the different times of day. We thought we had good images so we went to edit them and then realised that it might have been better to use three lights as there was a shadow in the top right hand corner that shouldn't have been there so we went back to shoot again with a tripod and another light.

I had fun creating these images but if we had more time I think we could have come up with a much better narrative and a set designed by us instead of using another set made by someone else. The lighting ended up working better than I first thought but I think again if we had more time we could have made the lighting look a little better, but the lighting we create don the images does show a sense of time passing.

One thing that would have been more helpful was if a couple of people had put a bit more effort in. We all decided on roles that we would focus on and I was supposed to be on lighting but because a couple of people weren't willing to do their job I ended up having to do the lighting and then helping move the characters across the set. Besides this it did all work out very well.

Below is a slideshow in the order of how we want the story to be told. I think the final images have turned out really well and tell the story well.
