Contextual Studies - Seminar

I always really look forward to my seminar sessions as we always talk over any parts of the Monday lecture that we didn't quite understand and we then talk through and look at photographers that have created work similar to what were studying in contextual studies.

Stephen King Photography, Here There, work in progress

This project investigates the nature of shortcuts and desire paths. All of the images look very abandoned as if no-one goes there which is surprising as the paths that have been created are very prominent. In some cases in the images there are people and others there isn't. One question I asked myself was 'could I identify these spaces with myself?' I can't identify the spaces to me personally in the sense of the locations of the images but I can definitely with creating a desire path and going off track as I like to day dream and go off into my own world.

Jan Dirk van der Burg, Desire Lines, 2011

Showing how people take different paths to A and B. The image below shows one person taking the shortcut that has been made in the path and the other person has taken the path created. This shows what we were talking about in our lecture but in pictures. I think the project is interesting and really makes you realise that we all do this without realising but I personally don't think I would go and see this at an exhibition necessarily.

Richard Long, England 1968

I found this artist very intriguing as he calls himself the walking artist which reminds me of Jason Hirons who came in to speak to us last year. Long calls himself the walking artist because he photographs what he encounters or marks upon the land. He however is not just a photographer he's more well known as a sculptor. There was one image of a sculpture he made that really caught my eye. This image caught my eye because it Ade me question the image. Why is the X there? How did the X get there? Why did it stop where it did? I can tell the image has a meaning behind it.

Andy Goldsworthy, Morning Earth

Again another sculptor that is very interesting, I have heard of Goldsworthy before. He is very interested in landscape and personal spaces like parks and woodland. He uses found stuff from the parks and woodland. His project Morning Earth consists of lots of images created with the nature he finds. This one image below really stood out to me because of the colours. The leaves are around the tree stump but he hasn't post produced he's just spent ages manipulating the leaves around the tree stump.

One story that has come into the news over the last day or two is a lady who was on a flight sat in the middle of two overweight people...
