Ever Tried, Ever Failed? - Part 2

Gareth Southgate: A Redemption Story - Case Study

Who is Gareth Southgate?

Current England team manager

His early career:

  • Started his career at Crystal Palace and became captain there in 1993 and won First Division. Looking at these facts alone could he be successful? Personally I think yes, he joined Crystal Palace in 1988 and 5 years later he was still there and the manager and then won the first division, all of this is very impressive so yes I would say he was successful.

  • He then moved to Aston Villa in 1995 where he played in the FA Cup final

  • He was then sold to Middlesborough in 2001 and became the first captain to lift a trophy in 128 years. To me this sounds very impressive but is making me question whether this was just down to him being the captain, was it down to his manager at the time and his players?

Euro 96:

  • Was hosted in England

  • Was when the three lions was released

  • He had very little experience in taking penalties as he was a young player and was a defender or midfielder but his coach asked him if he would take a penalty and he said yes. His penalty was saved which meant the team was knocked out of the game. This was when he felt low in his career but I think that is what has made him become as successful as he is today because without that feeling of failure he may have always been cocky thinking he could do anything when in actual fact everyone fails at some point in their life, some before others, and some more publicly than others.

  • 27 years later however he becomes the England manager

Why are we talking about Gareth Southgate?

  • Because he tried something and he failed

  • He decided he wanted to learn something from his failure

  • The lecture was all about taking ourselves away from negative effects from when something happens

How can we use his story in a creative practice?

Follow his journey to help us become as successful as him

  • Resilience

  • Reflection

  • Rectification

With these things we can work towards seeing failure as a positive thing

Personal journey

How can I practice this in my uni experience? How I can change that? Places at uni I could do this:

  • SU

  • Student Voice

Learn from Experiences

  • Crit sessions

  • Peer feedback

  • Flexibility

  • Teamwork

Media Reaction/Feedback

Feedback was really positive on the England team and Gareth Southgate after the World Cup this year

Better feedback is feedback that tells you what you did well or what could be altered slightly to make it better which then makes it positive not negative. Don't focus on the negatives harshly think more positively.

REMEMBER - YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST CRITIC

We then spoke about Dr Pippa Grange who's job is to prepare the team for failure. As she helps them prepare for failure she is reflecting on what they can do so we looked at two different reflective models to help us reflect on what we can do.

Kolb (1984)

Rolfe et al (2001)

Recognise the bigger picture before it’s too late it's easy to look back on something and reflect on it. This lecture really made me realise that everyone makes mistakes and fails and it's okay to do that, in fact if we didn't then were not experiencing life like we should be.
