I've been wanting to get my shooting started as soon as possible. I was away at the weekend assisting a photographer in London so I took the opportunity to write my manifesto on the train up. In my manifesto I have written a list of places I want to shoot at that all have meaning to me.
Why London?
London was one of then places to shoot at because it's somewhere I don't go very often because it's expensive to travel and stay there so whenever I go it's always for a reason, mainly an event that I will remember.
The first time I visited London was with my mum and sister. I remember my mum had saved up for us to travel and stay up in London for the weekend. I remember staying in Wembley and leaving on the Friday after school in order to travel up. We stayed in the hotel once we arrived and had some food and then the next day we went out and explored all the tourist attractions, the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, Houses of Parliament and so on. We all had a great time and I remember being really good with the tube maps even though I had never been to London before.
The next time I went was just my mum and I because we went to see a concert, again at Wembley but this time we stayed at my cousins little apartment, the day after we went for breakfast in Covent Garden and made our way home.
I have been three times in the past few months once for another concert, one was a flying visit as we travelled up to get the Eurostar from St Pancreas and then the other day to assist a photographer. I have never been to London on my own but I'm sure I will one day.
Where did I want to shoot?
By the time that my mum and I arrived at the hotel it was around 4pm so it was going to get dark pretty soon. We wanted to go and find out where exactly I had to go to assist the photographer and then we went a shot. We went to Piccadilly Circus but there was so many people around I wouldn't have even been able to stand and take one image because of the amount of peoples it was a Saturday night. I then thought that I would like to go to the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament to take some long exposure images. I wanted to take some long exposure images because as my project is based on memories I wanted to show through the long exposure just how quickly time goes. I haven't really done long exposure work before and I have recently bought a mini tripod and a 10-18mm lens for long exposures so I wanted to try them out. It was pitch black by the time we got to the London Eye so I thought long exposure images would have been the most effective in the circumstances.
My contact sheet:
I didn't take many images because I was doing long exposures so I had to wait a little longer, all of my images were taken on a 30 second exposure, I also wanted to take less photos but be more precise and think more about the images I was taking and where I was taking them. As I said I have recently bought myself a 10-18mm lens which I took with me to try out and it worked so well. I used my 18-55mm lens and my 10-18mm lens and the ones with my wide angle lens worked so much better.
I have spoken through my images during a crit at uni and we spoke through whether they're going to fit in with my theme of images for my final imagery. I had thought about this as I hadn't mentioned about shooting at night before but because I haven't got any other images to go off yet I can't say whether they're going to fit in with my theme of final images yet. My favourite images from the shoot are the long exposure images from outside the House of Parliament but one of my lecturers really liked the the darker images because you can't really see what's in the images and makes the reader question what's happening, but those were the images that I didn't like but after she said that I could see where she was coming from but I still don't think I'll use those if I use any in my final series of images.
