This afternoon we had our usual Tuesday afternoon sessions and today we were gettig our blogs up to date, focusing on our individual platforms and having a session on persuasive writing.
We looked at the artists Richard Prince who had screenshotted someone's Instagram picture who he doesn't know and sold it at an exhibiton at a gallery for $90,000. We had to think about our opinion towards this and then back it up with a solid reason. My opinion towards this that I agreed with both sides of it. This is what I wrote:
Should artists be allowed to sell uncopyrighted images as their own?
The artist Richard Prince did in his 'New Portraits' exhibition which meant that he found a picture that he liked on Instagram and print screened he then sold it at his exhibition. Unfortunately the person who took the picture and posted it on Instagram found out and started claiming that she had never given permission but if she had actually read the terms and conditions on Instagram she would find out that she doesn't have the right to say that she owns anything as none of the pictures posted on Instagram have a copyright attached to any picture. If that was me I would be annoyed at myself for not taking it to an exhibition myself to get $90,000. If that was you would t you be annoyed in yourself? This is my view personally and I think there's nothing wrong with it but morally and ethically I think that it is wrong because everyone should be brought up in a way where asking for permission is the right thing to do and anyone who doesn't ask permission is selfish.
My only advice is read terms and conditions and know what your doing.
Again, like the task last week I found this quite hard as well because I had a split opinion so putting forward my opinion to persuade others to agree in both of my opinions but I thought that the session was quite beneficial because I will probably need to persuade people in the future to want their photos to be taken by me and so that people can hire me etc.
After we had finished upstairs we went downstairs to focus on getting our individual platforms organised and to get our blogs up to date. I focused more on my individual platform because I have only just started it so I want to gwt as much information and imagery on it as I can. I did a bit to my blog but not much as I was focusing more on my platform but my blog is near enough up to date.
