Royal William Yard

This afternoon we went to Royal William Yard to practice our camera skills and to try and get some pictures that include some of the formal elements from this mornings lecture.

I had never been to Royal William Yard before this afternoon so I was interested to see what it was like, it was sunny as well which made it look even better.

Royal William Yard was the major victualling depot for the Royal Navy. It was designed by by the architect Sir John Rennie and was named after King William IV. Royal William Yard was built between the years of 1826 and 1835. William's Yard closed in 1992 and passed into private hands. Now as a Grade 1 listed site it has been converted to an up - market mixed use development by Urban Splash (a property development group).

I went to Royal William Yard in the hope that I would be able to practice some of the formal elements. I wanted to try to look at lines, texture and try rule of thirds.

The picture above is a picture that I tried for the element of lines. I came up with this idea because I wanted to try and show a less obvious line made out of objects. When I saw this row of benches I suddenly thought about them as a line but then I saw the cars parked in the same direction so that also creates a line. I think this is effective because it shows two different lines in two different ways.

The two images of the harbor at Royal William Yard could also show lines in an unusual way. If you look at the horizons in both of the pictures they are pretty straight which can show lines in a very unusual way. If I was to take some more pictures to do with lines I will try to create pictures that include lines in a less obvious way for example, lines created by colours, tone and light.

The phone box above was me experimenting with colour. Everything at Royal William Yard was quite neutral and all made up of neutral colours but then I saw this and I thought that it would look really good for a 'colour' picture. I love how bright the phone box is and how it really stands out compared to the wall and the gravel on the floor. The one thing that I don't like about this image is that you can see my reflection in the glass so if I was to re shot an image like this again I would take it at a different angle.

This image was an experiment for rule of thirds. I have heard of rule of thirds before but have never really taken a picture realising that I'm using rule of thirds. By shooting using the rule of thirds it means that you line the picture that you want to take up with the grid intersections on the camera. I have to be honest I didn't line this picture up using the grid but that was because there wasn't a grid on the camera and I couldn't work out how to get a grid up on the screen.
