This afternoon we had a lecture on different Marine and Coastal photographers to help us with ideas about what we could do for the new brief that we were set yesterday. We also got given some tips on how to get really effective landscape photographs. The first tip we got given was about the time of day to shoot, and how to understand the natural light by using the early mornings and the late evenings. Even if the sun has gone down continue shooting because the reflections can make amazing images. We looked at an image by Tim McKenna.

I love this image by Tim McKenna above because I love how the image has been taken at either sunrise or sunset with the mast of the yacht separating the image into two different shades of yellow and orange. It's almost as if the mast of the yacht is showing sunrise and sunset in one image.

We also got taught to remember the formal elements when taking landscapes.

1. Use low perspective or wide angled lenses to add drama

2. Use lead in lines

3. Set the main focal point on one of the intersections of the rule of thirds

4. Get some good foreground interest

5. Watch out for wonky horizons (maybe use a tripod)

Although I got told about the rule of thirds when I first started the course I couldn't remember what it meant so I researched it again. 'The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide line and their intersection point, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line.'

The equipment that I should use in order to get a high quality landscape is:

1. a tripod

2. filters

3. cable release

4. watch out for wide angle distortion

5. use a waterproof camera bag

One of the images above is an image by Andrew Nadolski and one is taken by myself. The image on the left hand side is a picture taken by Nadolski and the image on the right is an image that I have taken.

My image has been taken at a beach near to where I live. When I Iooked at this image I started to think that my image looked similar to Nadolski's in a way, except Nadolski's image has some mist over the water which has either been edited or the image was taken with the mist there.
