Haytor, Dartmoor

Haytor is my third location to shoot. I have chosen Haytor as it is probably one of the most popular places on Dartmoor which I have visited many a times and is a lovely place to shoot. I have been thinking of shooting Haytor at either sunrise or sunset (probably sunset) as it looks so beautiful in the early mornings, late evenings. You can see Haytor miles away, you can even see Haytor from my house.

Haytor

Haytor is a granite tor on the eastern edge of Dartmoor. Idetordoune, Ittor Doune, Idetor and Itterdown are just a few of the names that have been given to Haytor in earlier times. The name Haytor is a recent name and is probably a new version of its old name, Haytor Hundered, which covered the coastal area between the River Teign and River Dart.

In the 19th century steps were cut into one side of the tor and a metal handrail fixed to allow tourists easier access up the tor. This was not accepted by a lot of people and in 1851 someone called Dr Croker complained that the rock steps weren't a natural part of humanity. In the 1960's the handrail was removed due to it rusting. On Haytor you can still see the stumps of the handrail as the rock hasn't fully embedded.
