Pass, Merit and Distinction

We got shown three different examples of Pass, Merit and Distinction pieces of work that have been marked by UAL and we had to decide which one was at a pass grade, which one was at a merit grade and which one was at distinction grade, at first I thought that the link underneath was at a distinction grad:

I thought this was at a distinction grade to start off with because the student had included lots of analysis and research and had linked all of their shoots back to their research but I then changed my mind to think that all of the work went in this order:

1. Merit

I changed my mind to think that this piece of work was in fact merit because even though the student had included a lot of research, analysis and shoots linking back to research they hadn't included that extra bit to their work like another piece of work, but from the images below you can see that this person has included a lot of detail and analysis.

2. Distinction

After reading through this student's work I originally thought that this was at a merit grade but then I read more into their work and saw that they had mentioned that they had a sketchbook of darkroom pictures which I personally thought would bring their grade up slightly more than the other pieces of work, as well as having a good body of work including, research, analysis and photography.

3. Pass

I thought that this piece of work was graded at a pass level as there was a very limited amount of content to their work and looked almost as if the student had done as little as possible just to pass the unit.

After we had analysed each piece of work and decided what grade we thought they were we discussed them as a group and in fact I was wrong about two of the grades. Number 1 was in fact a distinction grade and number 2 was in fact a merit grade.

After reading through all of the work I have now realised what I need to do in order to get the grade that I want to reach. I am aiming for a merit and possibly a distinction as I believe that you shouldn't just settle for what you can be bothered to do you should push yourself, in order to achieve this I need to get out and shoot and link my shoots back to my research, produce contact sheets and analyse them, evaluate shoots, include lighting diagrams (where possible) and analyse.
